Aragon’s prom was held at the Galleria in San Francisco on the evening of April 11 after much anticipation from the junior and senior classes. The Casino Royale-themed prom generally met everyone’s expectations, if not exceeded.
Senior Travis Kwee, a member of the Senior Class Student Council, says, “It went really well. I was a little bit unsure about the theme because first of all it seemed to be that the guys had voted for casino royale while the girls had been split between the other three themes, so we were worried about some of the girls not liking the theme as much.”
In addition, Kwee and the prom committee faced a slight mishap when sophomores from the leadership class were supposed to help set up at 2 p.m. on Friday but cancelled last minute.
Kwee says, “So we were very short-staffed. Instead of leaving [the Galleria] at around 3:30 like we planned, we stayed until 5 o’ clock. All of the seniors who were helping set up only had an hour to get ready for prom.”
This year’s prom king and queen were seniors Nat Blood and Kelly Chang. Neither expected to win the crown.
Chang says, “When they read my name, I was really surprised, but I won with my date, so that was really cool.”
Blood adds, “I was surprised, but I guess I’m just oblivious to these things.”
Chang says, “Definitely winning prom queen was the highlight. Everything ran smoother last year and everyone looked really nice. The cool thing about prom for me is going and seeing everyone dressed up nicely.”
This year, many sophomores attended prom. Sophomore Kristan Hilby says, “I didn’t really know what to expect. I didn’t really have many expectations. I did have a really fun night though.”
She continues, “My date hangs out with my friends and it was with people that I knew and people that I liked, so it was really fun. I didn’t feel weird going as a sophomore at all.”
There were certainly many enjoyable moments at prom. Many students enjoyed the casino games, as it allowed them to take a break and play card games with their friends as opposed to dancing for three hours straight. Some of the games were poker, black jack, and roulette.
In addition to the card games, the venue received possible reviews. Junior Rachel Leung says, “I liked how there were multiple levels with a big open space in between all the floors, so I could still see the dance floor.”
Many students also enjoyed the new photo booth services this year.
Because the photo booth was so popular, Chang comments, “The line was too long the whole night, so I didn’t end up going to it. It was definitely a good idea since a lot of people used it though.”
Additionally, Senior Luis Hernandez says, “The photo booth took a picture every five seconds so I couldn’t figure out my pose.”
Though many students liked the photo booth, many did not like the music. Some students agreed that the music played was just not fit for prom. Chang says, “The DJ … some of the songs … a lot of it was EDM (electronic dance music), so a lot of the songs I didn’t know.”
Hernandez agrees, adding “I wish they could’ve had a little bit more on the playlist. It was not really that danceable.”
Blood states, “Personally, I didn’t enjoy the music. A lot of it sent bad messages, but that was just me.”
Even though there are different likes and dislikes of prom, most students can agree on one thing. As Blood says, “Of course, what I think really makes prom a good experience is friends.
Kwee concludes, “The whole experience was very good. We sold 545 tickets. Almost selling 550 tickets is a very good turnout.”
