On November 9, a deadly gas explosion ripped through San Bruno, displacing hundreds of people. However, it was not only people who were affected by the incident; animals and pets were displaced as well. The animals that were lucky enough to escape have been since taken in by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), a non-profit organization that helps to protect animals that are in danger. Upon hearing about the situation, Aragon students decided to start the Adopt-an-Angel campaign.
The Adopt an Angel name stands for a campaign being run by Aragon Leadership. It is a simple October fundraiser that asks Aragon students to give a hand to homeless, poor or less-fortunate animals by donating essential materials to the SPCA/Peninsula Humane Society. The list ranges from bird toys to even used cell phones, pagers, and PDAs.
Aside from just helping animals in need, the program also benefits the San Mateo community in different ways. Junior Jessica Navarro says, “It is a great way for teens to help out workers in the SPCA that already do so much for pets.” Senior Nicole Killigrew also added that, “People learn how to give back to the society they live in.”
Junior Dani Cutts, organizer of the campaign, says, “Originally Adopt-An-Angel was a silent auction and fundraiser for Samaritan House, but the fundraiser never raised enough money to maintain itself so they stopped holding it.”
She then continued to add that, “This year, Public Relations (the commission in Leadership that puts on fundraisers) decided to re-do Adopt-An-Angel but make it new and different to see if it would be more successful.”
Cutts also wanted Aragon students to know that this Adopt-an-Angel campaign will not be the last chance to donate items or money.
