The Aragon basketball season has just finished up after the CCS playoffs. Aragon’s girls’ varsity team finished the regular season undefeated in the PAL Ocean division. The boys’ team finished second in the Ocean Division with a 7-3 record. Several players on each team made all-league teams, including Justine Kubo who was named the league’s MVP.
Girls’ varsity was defeated 57- 55 by the Los Altos Eagles on Feb. 21.
After defeating Willow Glen 65-60 on Feb. 23 with a comeback from a 17-point halftime deficit, the Aragon boys were defeated 91-34 by Archbishop Mitty and top recruit Aaron Gordon in the Division II CCS Championship quarterfinals.
Before the game, Aragon coach Sam Manu compared the teams to the story of David and Goliath. Many of the Aragon players realized a victory would be improbable, but remained hopeful with their “we’re coming for you Aaron” chants during practices.
Though only a junior, Mitty small forward Aaron Gordon is nationally considered one of the best high school players in the nation. Senior Yash Kaiwar said, “It was cool playing against Aaron Gordon because he is definitely going to be a great college and possibly NBA player.”
Despite the season-ending loss, Aragon’s same starting five will return next year, now with playoff experience to match their talent.
