The Aragon swim team ushered in its new season with tryouts on Jan. 28.
“We had a smaller team [last year] for girls JV, so I think we’re at a disadvantage for that,” says junior Paige San Felipe.
Junior David Leong agrees and says, “We are definitely a smaller team when compared to schools like Menlo and Burlingame. They are a lot bigger, like three times as big.”
San Felipe says, “I heard that one of them is the coach from two years ago, and my friend is on his swim team outside of school. I heard he is a good coach, older but definitely still strict and will get us where we need to be… [But] I think people are just more excited to be playing sports and the coaching isn’t really a big issue for us.”
Senior Marie Mihara says, “The season should be great. There are a lot more people. More underclassmen. We’ve got the great locker rooms now, which is really nice. And we’ve settled into the new pool now.”
Fred Farley, varsity swim coach, did not coach the swim team last year, but he is a returning coach for the team. In terms of coaching changes from two years ago Farley comments, “It’s pretty straightforward, [and] I won’t be changing much this year. I’ve also coached a club team before.”
Farley says, “I am hoping everyone is committed to bettering themselves. Kids making an effort goes a long way in making success. Hopefully they are able to do that.”
New JV coach Roxanne Tursi says, “This [year] is my first time coaching at Aragon. I have coached previously at Sacramento City College in Sacramento and also at a high in Sacramento called River City.”
Looking to the season, she notes, “I think we are hoping to set some records this season. Definitely make some CCS times and maybe bring home a championship.”
