After splitting the season series against the Mills Vikings last season, the Aragon boys varsity basketball team looked to tally the first win over Mills in their Ocean division matchup on Jan. 16. Last season, Mills employed a high 2-3 zone on defense to counteract Aragon’s slashing opportunities and dare the Dons to rely on three-point attempts. Similarly, the Vikings went with the same strategy in Aragon’s first home quad of the season en route to their 61-42 victory over the Dons.
Seeing the Dons begin to struggle, Coach Sam Manu put in freshman guard Daveon Cox who quickly found junior forward Kimon Economou for a quick three pointer to break the Dons’ scoring drought. Aragon would attempt a handful of quick buckets, but the Vikings’ control on the boards and easy put-backs on the offensive end left the score at 19-8 at the end of the first.
The Dons could not find any answer to Mills’ suffocating zone defense for the second season in a row. The Vikings took advantage of Aragon’s multiple turnovers and scored easy fast-break points off the Dons’ apparent carelessness.
After creating an 18-point lead over the Dons at halftime, Aragon employed their own version of the press in the third quarter, but found no luck. Mills increased their lead to twenty three at the end of the third quarter. A highlight for the Dons came off of a nifty three-point play from Cox with a smooth up-and-under lay-in.
On the defensive end, the Vikings had no problem holding their big lead through the fourth quarter. As the buzzer sounded, Mills capped off their varsity sweep of the Dons with a wire-to-wire win, reducing Aragon’s league record to 1-3 while increasing their own record to 4-0.
Aragon will face Menlo-Atherton next on Wed., Jan. 21 at 5:30PM as they seek their first two game road win-streak of the season.
