On Friday, April 10, students traveled back to the roaring ’20s for a night in gowns and tuxes. This year’s prom embodied the essence of a Great Gatsby party, inspired by the jazz age novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and included flapper girls, pool tables and gold coins scattered across tables.
The junior and senior classes ultimately voted on senior Olivia Cosca’s Great Gatsby theme from the Prom Theme competition, after the Leadership class sent out Google forms where the upperclassmen could vote on themes. Junior Danya Sandler says, “It was cool to have the performance with modern music and it’s really nice how everything flows together from the ‘20s to the 21st century.”
The Senior Class Council and Prom Committee sold 453 tickets.
Between dancing and playing the various games set up around the floor, senior Vivian Shen remarked, “I really like the energy at prom.” She added, “I’m on the prom committee, so I’m kind of biased. But we’ve had this venue for four years so I’m really familiar with it, although something new that’s really nice are the decorations and the DJ which went really well with the Gatsby theme.”
To junior Jolene Hsu, this was the last school dance with her sister. She says, “My sister is going off to college, and I really enjoyed just spending our last dance together, just spending time together.”
Junior and new student Ian Waugh comments, “The venue is awesome. I’m new to Aragon, so I’m new to the dances, but it’s definitely a lot of fun.”
In the weeks building up to prom, the committee spent their free time and a weekend preparing decorations. Wang explains, “We all went to Ms. Ward’s room on a Saturday and spent a couple hours making everything.”
Senior Emma Wynn adds, “This is my second prom and the theme and DJ are definitely better than last year, although some of the song choices weren’t the best for a dance.”
After the flapper girls finished their performance and the night was close to its end, the prom royalty winners were announced. Students were able to vote online and via a mobile app, instead of using paper ballots.
Juniors Anna Joshi and Charles Cao and seniors Ryan Field and Tali Havin won the crowns for the night.
Wynn enjoyed her second prom at Aragon, saying, “The students’ ability to really have fun without worrying about what they look like on the dance floor makes Aragon’s prom more fun.”
