While Aragon did not get quite the reception from its fans playing a “home” game at Burlingame that it would have gotten at Aragon, the Dons were stout in defeating Lincoln-San Jose 42-14.
Aragon’s offense fared well against Lincoln, which was unable to contain the Dons’ passing and running game throughout the night.
“They’re good,” said Lincoln coach Kevin Collins. “Offensively, we thought we were going to play-action a little more – didn’t happen. We’re typically a running team, but they’re very physical and so it was harder to run against them.”
Aragon quarterback senior Tanner Nguyen was able to carry over his strong performance from the previous contest and complete 20 or 29 for 194 yards and two touchdowns.
Don fans roared in approval at the emergence of a budding duo between Nguyen and wide receiver sophomore Davion Cox, especially in reaction to their 22-yard completion in the fourth quarter. Cox was able to escape the Lincoln defense draped all over him and score not only his first touchdown of the season, but also the Dons’ sixth and final touchdown to extend the lead to 41-14.
Aragon’s cohesive line paved the way for runners like junior V.A. Wilson, and sophomores Donaven Robinson and Gabe Campos to combine for over 108 yards and four touchdowns.
“That quarterback they got is phenomenal. Their receivers are tough to stop,” Collins said. “Defensively, we tried to stop them, but their athletes were just a little bit better.”
Lincoln tried to use play-action to confuse the Aragon secondary, but had limited success. Early in the third quarter, against a rapidly approaching swarm of Dons, Lincoln quarterback senior Robert Zamora was forced into throwing an interception, leading to a 35-yard scoring run by Dons’ running back junior Fifita Alusa.
Lincoln running back junior Robert Najar scored the first TD against Aragon this season, with a 5-yard run. The Dons had outscored opponents by an 88-0 margin in the previous two games.
Aragon meets San Mateo next week. Lincoln hosts Willow Glen.
