On May 13, students sacrificed their Friday night to attend the second annual Color Dye-Phoon. Starting at 7 p.m. clubs sold drinks and treats as a means to fundraise. At 8 p.m., the dance began as the DJ blasted music and students threw colored powder at friends, covering faces, clothes, and the grass.
Even as clubs were given the opportunity to gain money from selling food and drinks, many clubs actually lost money as students were less enthusiastic to buy them. Some clubs ended up giving drinks and food out for free due to a failure to sell out. Junior Carolin Jia says, “A lot of people ate beforehand, so we aren’t actually making that much money. But it’s good to sell just to gain exposure.”
As Leadership provided a variety of different colors, each person was given one or two cups of colored powder before the color ran out. Freshman Victoria Ramirez wishes that there was more powder and believes that the color throwing aspect was too short with the lack of supply, saying, “I got one cup and just threw it, [but] I would go back next year.”
Leadership broadcasted this event through video announcements and providing a free shirt for the first 200 people who purchase tickets, Freshman Anahi Rosales says, “It was fun and awesome. They did enough advertising.”
After students threw color around for a while, the dance started at 8:15 p.m. with the DJ playing the “Cha Cha Slide” for students.
Elizabeth Burgos enjoyed the experience. Burgos concludes, “I’ve never been that much involved in the school [but] I would attend next year.”
