The day after Aragon’s 42-28 thumping of San Mateo, then-freshman running back Camron Grant was at a Saturday practice when he was approached by a couple of fans who were so impressed with one of his runs that they asked for his autograph.
As a freshman, Camron Grant played varsity football and baseball as well as junior varsity basketball for Aragon. Wearing No. 6, he is now a sophomore and continues to grow and thrive both on and off the field.
Over the course of his first two seasons as a Don, he has created unbreakable bonds with his teammates.
Says junior quarterback Gabe Campos, “He’s like a brother to me. He’s a young kid but I think he has the right mindset to be a great player.”
In addition to his teammates, Grant also has created positive relationships with his coaches.
Football head coach Steve Sell considers Grant an incredibly hard worker and has high expectations for him for the remainder of his high school career, saying, “I expect him to emerge as more of a team leader as he gets older. He’s going to be an outstanding baseball player also … I expect him to be a very good player at everything he does because he’s got the athletic ability.”
During Aragon’s 52-26 loss to Sacred Heart Prep last November, Grant scored his first touchdown. “It was a very emotional moment for me,” he explains. “I got on the sideline and I bowed down to a knee and I started crying, it was wonderful. It’s all tears of joy.”
His brother, Devin Grant, a former tri-sport phenom for the red and black, motivated and inspired Camron during their time together on the same field. As a freshman, Camron was able to play on the same football and baseball team as his brother.
“It was kind of a dream of mine to play with him,” says Camron. “To play with him in football alone was a dream of mine because I didn’t think I would be there.”
History teacher and football coach Steve Henderson is familiar with both brothers, and sees similarities between the two, explaining, “They both lead by example as far as giving an excellent effort and practice and in games. That’s contagious to their teammates.”
Despite his obvious athletic talents, Grant is quick to give others credit for his success, especially his brother, explaining, “He’s taught me the right way to play… [he] has played a big role on my life and my athletic career…I’ve had some good memories with my brother.”
Grant’s mother, a former El Camino basketball player, is one of his biggest motivators. She attends all of his games and cheers him on from the stands.
“She tells me if I did something wrong,” says Grant. And she acknowledges [when I do] something right.”
Senior offensive lineman and tight end Enzo Fuenzalida acknowledges Grant’s mindset and athleticism.
“He is hardworking and he does give us a lot of motivation,” he says.
After observing one of his runs against San Mateo in which he ran over a tackler, spun off a defender, and carried the run for another 20 yards, Fuenzalida came to the conclusion that “[Camron] is definitely one of my favorite running backs to watch.”
Although a fantastic athlete, Grant is just as dynamic in the classroom.
With a good work ethic and drive, he isn’t one to procrastinate. “He seems to like to get stuff done” says Henderson.
With a stellar all-around skillset that expands far beyond the football field, Grant believes he has the abilities to take his talents to the next level, as he hopes to play Pac-12 football or baseball.
However, for the time being, he is focused on excelling during the rest of his career in red and black.
