This statement represents the opinion of all 15 Outlook editors.
In the eight weeks since Donald Trump became the U.S. president, he has taken many actions that significantly differ from presidential policy in the past eight years. He signed an executive order barring non-citizens from six Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S., he laid out a plan to speed up and increase deportations of undocumented immigrants and he reversed an Obama-era directive that told public schools to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker facilities of their choice.
Such actions are not reflective of the American ideals of freedom and equality, and, even more so, are not reflective of the Aragon community’s values of inclusivity and support for all students, regardless of race, immigration status or gender.
As such, the Outlook would like to show its support for students who might feel unsettled by Trump’s actions. We support the teachers who gathered on Alameda de las Pulgas the day the before Trump’s inauguration to demonstrate their belief that everyone, regardless of immigration status, has a right to a public education. We support the San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees’ resolution that prevents the release of private information of undocumented students unless required by law. We support the press release sent out by California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson reinforcing the protections guaranteed by state law that allow transgender students to use facilities consistent with their gender identity. And we support every student of every race, gender, creed, sexuality, immigration status and religion.
The Outlook is proud to be a part of community with a strong infrastructure of support for all of its students, despite ill-advised actions taken by our president.
