The Dons (5-0 overall, 1-0 Peninsula Athletic League) continued their undefeated start with a dominant performance Friday against Sacred Heart Prep (1-4 overall, 0-1 PAL), winning 40-7.
“This was the best that I’ve seen an Aragon team play in a lot of years,” said head coach Steve Sell.
The Dons ran the ball most of the game, only having to pass four times. This led them to a 40-0 halftime lead.
“We got [senior guard] Ian Tapueluelu back and that made a big difference,” said Sell. “In my mind, they did not have enough guys inside to stop the run, so we kept on running it.”
Additionally, the Dons did not punt the ball at all.
“It means we moved the ball and executed,” says Sell. “Anytime you get through a game without punting, it was quite a good game.”
The offense was led by junior running back Paul Lautaimi, who racked up 135 rushing yards on 13 carries. Junior running back Camron Grant was also effective, rushing for 55 yards.
“We knew that they could not stop our running game and we kept running around and they could do nothing about it,” Lautaimi said, crediting his offensive line for creating space for him to run. “They open up holes and I just find my way through the holes.”
Lautaimi also had four touchdown runs, all of which came in the first half.
“I’m just having fun out here,” he said, “and when you are having fun, anything can happen,”
The defense was dominant the entire game, with their only blemish being a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. Senior defensive back Davion Cox had one interception in the second quarter. It would set up a one yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Gabe Campos that pushed the score at the time to 26-0, effectively sealing the game for the Dons.
“I think that they were very prepared and were confident,” said Sell. “We were just more physical.”
The Dons will host Terra Nova (4-1 overall) on Oct. 5th. Last year, they took down the Tigers 46-15 in Pacifica.
