After months of preparation, Campus Connections and Renaissance Leadership held its second biennial Lip Dub on Jan. 26. The school day followed a special bell schedule, with the filming for the Lip Dub taking place before lunch.
A central figure to the Lip Dub was junior Samantha Wen, who played the protagonist of the video’s plot. Going along with the this year’s theme, “One person; one family; one love,” Wen starts the Lip Dub as a new girl with no friends, but as the Lip Dub progresses, she becomes included as a member of the Aragon community.
“We had one actual rehearsal to get the timing with the sound and the video correct but other than that, it was really just the singers preparing on their own,” Wen said. “I came after school once to shoot the first scene alone, and I went to a flex with other groups of people to film me becoming part of the community … During the actual Lip Dub I think it was really great. If anything the music wasn’t loud enough to hear so I was kinda guessing on the timing of my lyrics. But I think every group had a lot of energy. I was by the football players so there wasn’t a lot of lacking in the energy department.”
Wen said that her favorite part of the Lip Dub this year was the amount of school spirit, and that compared to two years ago, the Lip Dub was more organized.
“Two years ago it was really spread out in the hallways and this year it was more condensed so we could see everyone in center court,” Wen said. “I like the way we did it this year just because the amount of energy that everyone had was amazing because
everyone was feeding off everyone else. This year was, in my opinion, just a little more organized because we have done it in the past and we now know what to do and how to do things more efficiently and effectively.”
Not everyone, however, had such a positive experience.
“For someone like me, and a lot of people in my friend group, the Lip Dub is somewhat of a waste of time,” said sophomore Kevin Yang. “Although it is a fun all-school event, standing around for a few hours is the extent of most people’s participation, and I think that’s just due to the nature of the Lip Dub. There are too many people to keep track of.”
The Lip Dub video was revealed to the school on Friday, Feb. 9 during the winter rally.
