The boys varsity baseball team (6-5-1) thrashed Washington (4-11) 14-0 on April 7.
After a rain delay, the game began with junior pitcher Conor Hourigan starting for the Dons by striking out the first batter. Catching for him was freshman Zach Harte, who was called up from the JV team due to varsity injuries.
“He did well. He stepped up and executed the way he was supposed to,” Hourigan said. “He had that good play in the beginning as well. He did a good job.”
After a scoreless first inning, the Dons put the game away early, as they led 6-0 by the end of the first inning. Junior outfielder Camron Grant hit a line drive up third to start, and the bases were loaded with Hourigan up to bat.
Washington struggled offensively against the Dons, as the Eagles held to only four hits. Although the Dons were expecting a win, Hourigan spoke about how the team has struggled in games against teams with a lower skill level.
“We really play down to [other teams’] level and end up not doing as well as we could have,”
Hourigan said. “But today was different, we really stayed focused and played the way we knew we were capable of.”
Junior shortstop Thomas Calvo was also happy with the team’s performance against Washington.
“We focused on playing the game and not the team,” said Calvo. “Our coaches keep telling us that in order to continue doing well in our season, we need to beat the teams we’re supposed to be winning against.”
