After holding multiple fundraisers to fund prom, the senior class will be hosting its last school dance on April 27. “A Night at the Oscars” prom will take place at the San Francisco Galleria.
In the process of choosing a theme, the Senior Class Council decided to host a prom theme competition where the winner would receive a free ticket to the dance.
“We host the contest because we really want to involve the student body in as much as we can,” said Senior Class President Giorgio Petrakis. “Ultimately, prom is for the student body, so it’s nice to give them an opportunity to be a part of the creative process.”
With her theme idea “A Night at the Oscars” drawing in the most votes, senior Lydia Villa won the competition.
“I wanted to think of something that would fit with what people are already wearing,” she said. “Red carpet attire is already pretty similar to what people wear to prom … I wanted it to be elegant and fun.”
Senior Alejandra Dominguez explained her excitement for her last prom at Aragon.
“I really like this theme,” Dominguez said. “I think that it was an original theme that kind of embraces the elegance of the occasion. I’m really excited to see something that really makes everyone forget they are in the SF Galleria.”
In the past, prom was solely planned by the senior class, however, this year, Leadership decided to have Dance Commission and the Senior Class Council work together. While the senior class was responsible for fundraising, Dance Commission was responsible for the allocation of funds. With the venue booked during the spring of 2017 at a cost of $13,000, special activities totaled to around $5,000 and decorations and invitations totaled to around $1,000.
Although prom costs a significant amount of money, in comparison to other schools in the San Mateo District, Aragon’s tickets started at a relatively low amount of $55 with PAL and $60 without.
“We believe as a community at Aragon, as a community of leaders to be more inclusive,” said Leadership teacher Melissa Perino. “Therefore, we provide the lowest prices out of the schools in the district.”
Scholarships are available in Assistant Principal Lisa Warnke’s office for those who cannot afford tickets.
