While not an athlete, sophomore Anthony Remedios is highly involved in Aragon’s sports programs. Remedios contributes to games by umpiring, announcing and managing the football and basketball teams. Remedios holds leadership positions both through sports and Aragon’s Leadership class, including sophomore class treasurer, next year’s Associate Student Body treasurer and president of the Fantasy Sports Club.
Remedios’s interest in sports came from his parents, who are season-ticket holders for the San Francisco Giants and San Jose Sharks, and would take him to several games. His passion for watching games sparked his desire to play.
“I began to play T-ball when I was six and I [played it] through seventh grade. I played basketball [in middle school],” Remedios said.
While Remedios enjoyed playing sports and the team atmosphere that came along with it, in seventh grade he decided to stop playing and instead began to seek out other opportunities to stay involved in athletics.
“Here and there I had some issues, but I realized that this isn’t really what I wanted to do and that I didn’t really have the talent to play in higher levels,” Remedios said. “I didn’t want to put myself in a position to get hurt or anything like that.”
Remedios switched to umpiring and announcing games for the local Little League. When he started at Aragon, Remedios reached out to athletic director Steve Sell and began announcing several games and taking statistics.
“I managed and announced junior varsity football last year,” Remedios said. “[I] announce[d] on the road and team manage[d] on the road. I did all of varsity football managing. I did the same thing for JV basketball and occasionally I kept the book. That was it for freshman year. This year I did the same thing and I also helped out with varsity basketball.”
His interest in sports has carried through the world of fantasy sports. Remedios was first introduced to fantasy sports by his dad, who was part of several fantasy baseball leagues. When walking around center court during the club fair, Remedios recalls that Fantasy Sports Club was the first group that caught his eye. After one year as a club member, Remedios was elected to be the club’s president.
“It’s just something I like doing, it’s very fun,” Remedios said. “My job is to set up all the leagues [and] make sure everyone is behaving during meetings.”
As club president, Remedios organizes and begins the fantasy leagues, along with preparing the club’s weekly meetings.
“Anthony is a very good leader,” said sophomore Matthew Pesusic, the secretary of Fantasy Sports Club. “He is always very organized, he prepares very well for all of the meetings and makes sure that [the club members] always have fun and enjoy the club.”
“He’s a hard worker and always goes the extra mile in anything he does”
Remedios’s interest in leadership arose from when he was advocating to keep the baseball field at Central Park when the 2014 Central Park Master Plan called for the field’s removal and replacement with a large lawn.
“There were a couple of guys who were trying to convince the city to save [the baseball field],” Remedios said, “It was a leadership sort of role, I helped get a lot of signatures and I also spoke at one of the board meeting… it got me really involved.”
In addition to his leadership role within Fantasy Sports Club, Remedios served as Treasurer for the class of 2020 during the last school year, and will be next year’s ASB treasurer. Remedios campaigned under the slogan, “You can’t spell Aragon without AR.”
“Anthony is an excellent student leader and has been since freshman year, here at Aragon,” said Leadership adviser Melissa Perino. “He has a willingness to listen to people, he makes very strong connections with the student body, he’s a hard worker and always goes the extra mile in anything he does.”
