This year’s The Greatest Homecoming, based on the 2017 movie The Greatest Showman, was held at the College of San Mateo on Saturday, Nov. 3. Approximately 610 students attended the dance.
For new students, homecoming was an introduction to Aragon, and for returning students, it was a way to kick off the year.
“[Homecoming was] a chance to hang out with your friends, and you see a lot of people that you usually don’t get to see because Aragon is such a big school,” said senior Lauren Pereira, who serves as co-commission head of Aragon’s dance commission. “It [was] just a lot of fun.”
Pereira’s job includes selling tickets, talking to vendors and the companies that provide the activities and decorations and communicating with staff members.
“We get help from Melissa Perino, who is our Leadership teacher, and Luci Tolfa, who is Aragon’s Financial Advisor, who helps us with counting money and also helps us contact the vendors that we use to finalize our transactions,” Pereira said.
The money made from the dance goes to all the other events Leadership plans throughout the school year.
Dance commission hoped to improve from last year’s homecoming. Freshman dance commission member Abigail Madrigal shared some new improvements that have been implemented this year.
“This year, we put a lot into it,” Madrigal said. “We took a huge amount of time discussing themes. There were 18 to 20 themes that we seriously considered. We [used] a lot of circus themed decorations. We hand-made a lot of these; we wanted to put our own piece into the dance.”
The dance had circus-themed decorations like red, black and white balloons and a red and white curtain resembling a circus tent. Other features of the dance included a foosball table, photo booth, cotton candy stand and Connect Four basketball game.
“We thought [the theme] would be a lot of fun, it is a big movie and we know a lot of people love that movie,” Madrigal said. “We were hoping we could make it into a dance with a lot of fun.”
The homecoming dance was indeed fun for students who have never attended homecoming before and returning students.
“I wanted to see what [homecoming] would be like for the first time, and also it sounded fun to go to with friends,” freshman Genevieve Bigue said.
Grace Xia, also a freshman, enjoyed homecoming.
“This year’s homecoming was fun,” Xia said. “The cotton candy was amazing,”
Junior Brian Lau also enjoyed homecoming for the second year in a row.
“This year’s homecoming was more or less similar to the last time I went, but at the same time, I did see that there was a larger variety of activities for those who believed that dancing didn’t really fit them like the foosball and connect four basketball,” Lau said.
