Halal Guys sits in the heart of downtown San Mateo, on East 3rd Avenue. The interior of the restaurant is simple and welcoming to all, which reflects its customer service.
The servers of Halal Guys are quick, easy to work with and offer great service to their patrons. I generally have a hard time interacting with people while ordering, but this experience was far easier for me.
The menu is simplistic: either a sandwich, which consists of either beef or chicken, or a platter, which has the same choices. There are also sides of hummus, falafel, baba ganoush and fries.
The sandwich is based on the Mediterranean gyro, which allows the sandwich to have a multitude of additions, such as lettuce, tomato and other vegetables. In addition to this, the traditional creamy tzatziki sauce can be made spicy with hot sauce. This sandwich comes in the size of a child size football, making it a formidable meal.
The other primary menu option is the platter which comes in two sizes. The small platter is actually quite substantial, being much less food than the regular sized platter but at a lower cost. This monster of a food platter will satiate almost anyone’s hunger. With their combination of rice, pita bread, chicken, beef and salad, you can find everything you might need to make it through the day in one of Halal Guys’ signature platters.
I had both the sandwich with beef and tzatziki sauce and hot sauce and the regular platter with the chicken combo with tzatziki sauce. I hadn’t eaten the entire day, and even after running three miles I could barely finish my food. This restaurant is not for people looking for a quick and light meal.
If you are out for a quick bite, sharing one small platter should be enough for two people.
Halal Guys is an eatery for the hungry, serving high quality and large quantity of Mediterranean food for a relatively low price.
