Juan Flores, who was previously assistant principal in the Alum Rock school district, is now part of the Aragon as the new assistant principal.
What made you want to apply for this position?
I heard great things about Aragon and the San Mateo community and did some of my own research. Once I saw the opportunity open, I was excited to apply. I felt that it was a good fit based on my experience, accomplishments, professional outlook and the school’s initiatives. Additionally, I taught and held different leadership positions at the high school level and I felt that it was time to go back to my passion (high school) after a couple of years serving as an Assistant Principal at a middle school.
What are the tasks that fall under this position?
My immediate tasks include: athletics, attendance office, dean’s office, EL coordination, school safety: emergency procedures and safety plan … CAST/CAASPP [testing], grade levels — 9th & 10th grade — and the Latino Parent Group.
How does this new position vary from your previous one? Does this feel different from your previous background of an admin/special education overseer?
I strongly believe that being an educator at any level or in any setting requires a high level of commitment and understanding of the initiatives, culture, community and student achievement. There has to be the passion and desire to support and help empower every team member [to] push for excellence and for all students to succeed. Thus, I can’t say it totally varies from my previous positions from the standpoint of a leader. However, being back at a high school, I get to see our sports teams, clubs and other amazing programs excel. Most importantly, I get to be a part of every student’s last four years of public education and make a positive impact on their future.
What are some goals you have for the school year and for Aragon’s future?
My main goal is to align myself with Aragon’s values and tradition of excellence. I plan to utilize my skill set, experience and values to fit with Aragon’s history of success. I also plan to work closely with families, students and our team to assure a sense of community. I am committed to keeping Aragon a great school where every student has a chance to thrive.
How will you be involved with the Spanish speaking community?
I take pride in making myself available to any member of our community. Since I am bilingual in Spanish I will utilize my skills to engage families into our Aragon culture. I am also looking forward to working with our Latino Parent Group!
