Treble With Angels, Aragon’s all-female a cappella group, anticipates changes in the coming school year. One difference may take the Trebles to the next level: a competition.
“It’s called ICHSA, the International Championship of [High School] A cappella,” said senior Elsie Peter.
ICHSA is the first competition the Trebles will ever enter, auditioning with three songs. While many competitions simply require participants to enter and compete, the Trebles must audition for the opportunity to compete in ICHSA.
“I think it’s a really cool experience. I’ve never gotten to do anything like it because I don’t really think about competitions,” Natarajan said. “And hopefully, [the competition will] make us better as a group, no matter what the outcome is. I think we’ll definitely learn a lot of good skills that we can take on for the entire year and beyond.”
Peter also plans to work on the group’s overall dynamic.
“I want to make sure that there’s a balance where the members respect the leader’s position, but the leaders are also willing to listen to the member’s input,” Peter said. “I just want to help create a group that is here to have fun with music, and not just create drama.”
Sophomore Riley Schmidt’s experience with the group is a bit different.
“As soon as I walked into the audition [for Trebles], they were all so kind,” Schmidt said. “I immediately felt welcome and that just progresses as the year went on. And as we [had] rehearsals … I just felt like I was part of this really great supporting community.”
Peter and Schmidt’s initial motivations for auditioning for Treble With Angels are not so different.
“I have always really loved singing and music and because I already had a visual [and] performing arts course in my schedule, I couldn’t do anything vocal-wise, so I was like, hey, this is something that seems fun, it’s part of what I love to do. So, I went in and it was incredible from the first rehearsal,” Schmidt said.
Peter auditioned for Trebles a second time after not getting in when she first auditioned in her freshman year for similar reasons.
“I don’t know, I really wanted to be a part of [Trebles]. I just really love singing and I’ve been singing since I was small,” Peter said. “I wanted to be a part of the acapella group.”
Although Peter expressed the desire to change dynamics in the group, Schmidt feels the group is largely in sync.
“We all just really love music,” Schmidt said. “I think one of our main goals as a group is to just … make everyone feel welcome, show them what a great community Aragon is.”
For Schmidt, Treble With Angels established a sense of purpose and belonging at Aragon during her freshman year.
“I just really want to have a good time at Aragon. I want to end my four years there with a lot of friends and feeling like I did something and I belonged,” Schmidt said. “And I think [being on Trebles is] a really great way to do that. We’re all friends in the group and it’s super nice. ”
