Musical chairs, relay races, dancing and laughter are seen within every Aragon rally. Hours of hard work by each grade’s class council are behind each event and activity. The class councils strive to maintain the Aragon community’s spirit.
Each council consists of four members: a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.
“We all work together,” said Class of 2026 vice president Sevara Saidova. “Our president, Emily, gets information from the leadership class [about] what the other class councils are planning, our co-secretary Aayushi puts things on live announcements [and] our treasurer Darrin handles merch and money.”
The class councils’ main goals are resolving potential issues on campus and making sure students have a positive Aragon experience. One strategy they have implemented is town halls, where students can share their opinions on campus issues.
“Before a town hall, all class councils [and] ASB discuss [what] we want to hear [about] from the student body,” said Class of 2023 president Kiana Dokanchi. “We take notes on student feedback and try to make changes within the school.”
Through activities, class council members are able to learn more about students’ needs. The Meet-and-Sweet activity gave the Class of 2026 council a chance to meet and learn more about students’ ideas.
“The Meet-and-Sweet was at the beginning of the year,” said Class of 2026 president Emily Peng. “We gave candy to the freshmen and [they] had a chance to … put their ideas on a sticky note. We had a whole board of ideas that we’ve discussed at our meetings.”
The class councils also design posters in hallways to boost and highlight Aragon pride.
“We’re planning this freshman mural,” Saidova said. “The mural is a way to showcase everyone in our grade. [The freshman class] would sign their names [with] colored markers [and then] put [the completed mural] up in the freshman hall.”
The class councils also organize fundraisers to provide money for future events. Each grade focuses on fundraising for their specific class.
“Our treasurer will reach out to the corporation,” Dokanchi said. “[They] speak to the manager and select a date [and price]. Then we begin advertising [where] normally the vice president will take over, make the Canva post on social media, put the fundraiser in live announcements [so students] go to the fundraiser.”
ASB also collaborates with class councils in many ways.
“In the Leadership class, [ASB] has a bigger role because we are overseeing the [Leadership] class [with] the teacher’s help and we help organize all the commissions,” said ASB Secretary Olivia King. “We have a lot of communication with [class councils]. We work with them on funding for rallies … and [ensure] that we don’t have overlapping events.”
Planning events is an extremely collaborative task.
“In leadership, there’s a class councils commission [which] consists of presidents and upperclassmen vice presidents,” said Class of 2024 President Enya Yuan. “We typically meet three times a week and we try our best to collaborate with them so our events don’t clash with each other. Once a week we [also] have our own class council meeting for just the juniors.”
However, it can be challenging to communicate plans to all members of the class council.
“Sometimes members of the council may not feel like they’re in the loop because we only physically meet with them outside of class once a week,” Dokanchi said. “It’s challenging to make sure everyone’s on the same page and understands plans because things change so fast in the leadership class.”
As the school year goes on, the class councils continue to plan activities for the future.
“The seniors are planning a spring flower event, where people would be able to buy flowers and gift them to their friends,” Dokanchi said. “We’re also hoping to host a spring senior movie night in collaboration with the PTSO. We’re not sure if it will happen though because it’s difficult to get events passed by the administration.”
The four members in each grade’s class council work together to plan and fundraise for future events, such as rallies, to boost school spirit and ensure that students are satisfied with their experiences on campus. Each class council impacts the Aragon community in various ways by working to provide students with a memorable high school experience.
