Aragon will be hosting the fourth-ever school-wide Lip Dub, which is set to be filmed for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. The biennial event was originally scheduled for the 2021-22 school year but was canceled due to COVID-related restrictions. The filming day was originally scheduled to take place on Jan. 23, but was postponed as a result of “relentlessly rainy weather.”
The event is organized by the Lip Dub commission, a group of six students who are responsible for all the planning and coordination of the event. They work on every aspect of the Lip Dub to create a final product that is fun, eye-catching and represents the Aragon community.
“It’s such a short video,” said Lip Dub commission head Kristen Yu. “[Students] don’t see the months of planning that went into not only developing [all aspects but] making sure everyone feels included and highlighted. I think it’s amazing, and we’re so proud of our work.”
“The main idea for this Lip Dub is staying present, enjoying what you have and living life to the fullest”
This year, the Lip Dub celebrates living in the moment. This theme intertwines with the central message of the event, which is one of school spirit and community.
“We’re thinking about all the stuff we went through with the pandemic and how hard it is to enjoy the moment without extra worries,” Yu said, “The main idea for this Lip Dub is staying present, enjoying what you have and living life to the fullest. The main value of Lip Dub has always been that we’re super proud of who we are … and we want to celebrate that.”
The Lip Dub’s videography is directed by senior Logan Wall, with the help of other students and video production teacher Nicholas Carrillo.
“A lot of different components go into [filming the Lip Dub],” Wall said. “From the skit at the beginning … [to filming] the student vignettes and … rehearsals for the actual Lip Dub day. Everyone has to be on top of their part.”
“It’s a way to showcase our whole student body, our campus, our [student] groups, our extracurriculars and our spirit”
This year, 32 clubs, sports and other groups shot vignettes, short clips at the beginning of the Lip Dub video that feature each group in their own unique light. Additionally, 91 individual lip syncers participated in the event, more than any previous Lip Dub.
“[The Lip Dub] is a great way for students to find a sense of community,” Wall said. “It’s a way to showcase our whole student body, our campus, our [student] groups, our extracurriculars and our spirit. A YouTube video that’s well-produced and includes the whole student body and is enthusiastically put together by the whole campus is a great way to represent our school spirit.”
The final video will be premiered on May 17, exactly two months after the filming day, at the postponed Formal rally.
“It’s perfect,” Yu said. “[The Formal rally] is an end-of-the-year rally more or less now, and ending the year with the Lip Dub is pretty sweet. It’s more of a recap … and by having it at the end of the year, it’s something to look back on.”
The Lip Dub filming day is now scheduled for March 17, rain or shine, with a special rally schedule.
