With all products readily available at supermarkets like Costco and Whole Foods for purchase, the grocery trip is typically quick. However, the produce at supermarkets may not be as fresh as it seems. According to The Guardian, many companies use different techniques to store their produce for as long as possible, some even being stored for months before they are shipped to the supermarket.
In contrast, the foods in local farmers’ markets are typically freshly grown and brought by farmers to their stalls. The farmers’ markets also have seasonal produce, and more variety, which may be harder to find elsewhere.
Produce at local markets, however, is not as accessible. Farmers’ markets are often open only once or twice a week, while supermarkets in San Mateo are open for more than 12 hours daily, and their fruits and vegetables sell for a cheaper price. At a supermarket, for example, an organic broccoli might cost around $3 per pound, while at the farmers’ market, it would be approximately $8 per pound.
“…It is clear that many of the stalls are family-run and owned by people in our community”
In regard to flavor, supermarkets have more robust flavors that many enjoy. The fruits from the farmers’ market have lighter flavors, which I like better. However, I find that the fruits at the farmers’ market are a bit smaller and sometimes have bumps and bruises.
In my personal experience after visiting the farmers’ market, it is clear that many of the stalls are family-run and owned by people in our community. They are much more willing to talk with their customers and are also more knowledgeable, able to answer most questions about their products, such as when a fruit or vegetable may be in season.
At the supermarket, most of the employees do not know the details of the products they are selling and sometimes are not as eager to help.
Farmers’ markets also have many stalls that sell drinks, flowers, baked goods and even popcorn.
I would encourage people who have the time and money to enjoy a morning or afternoon at the farmers’ market. Not only would this support local families running the stands, but also create a more enjoyable shopping experience. The San Mateo farmers’ market is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and I highly recommend everyone to visit at least once just to see and experience the local produce we have in our area.
