Macklin Berg
Freshman Macklin Berg, a saxophone player in Concert Band, won the Most Outstanding Director’s Award during the band concert on April 18.
“I felt surprised. I think I definitely worked hard … [but] I think there’s a lot of other people in the band who definitely also could have deserved the award. I’m glad I got it. My family was very surprised because they didn’t know that I had solos in the band, or that I was [going to] get an award … [When I practice], I just think to myself, ‘if I practice every day, then I … be the greatest saxophonist at the school, and then keep moving on from that.’ I’m trying to get into Jazz Ensemble, and I really need to practice a lot for that.”
Sathini Senthilkumar
Sophomore Sathini Senthilkumar is a part of the Aragon Badminton team, which qualified for the Peninsula Athletic League Championships.
“Me and my partner, we’re new partners this year, and it’s a big accomplishment considering the little [time] we had to play together and get used to our way of playing … To me, it’s a big thing since … I had a little over a year of experience … If my partner comes back this year, then we’ll continue to work on rotations and … learn [to] be more comfortable playing with each other and focus on being more aggressive.”
Shreya Gandhi
Junior Shreya Gandhi, the current Associated Student Body secretary, has been voted in as next year’s vice president.
“I really liked how driven the ASB group was [this year] and how we got to work with all the different commissions [in] leadership and be part of even bigger decisions on campus … I know next year it’s going to be harder because of [the] new principal [and] new activities director … Something that we want to keep the same is all of our events and how inclusive we are … and making sure that everyone’s seen on campus. [Becoming the ASB VP] made me really happy because … [it’s] a great way to also impact the school community … It’s going to be my senior year, [so I want to make] it the best year that it can.”
Gabriel Anagnoson
Senior Gabriel Anagnoson, a member of the Aragon varsity swim team, has recently won several awards.
“I qualified for [the Central Coast Section Championships] during the high school season at Aragon, at the PAL Championships. And then at CCS, I got second in the 100-backstroke and third in the 200-[individual medley], which qualified me for CCS State Individual [Championships]. The swim team as a whole, we also made [it to the] state [level] in two relays … I do about 20 hours a week [of practice] over nine practices … at a local club in Palo Alto. It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun. We get to get these accomplishments … and it’s what I love … I actually committed to Cornell for swimming … It’s a great opportunity in high school that led into something I can do in college as well.”
Scarlett Choy
Freshman Scarlett Choy, the current class of 2027 secretary, has been voted in as next year’s secretary as well.
“[I’m] kind of excited to do more because now I know a little bit more about the job, so I think we’ll accomplish more next year. I ran unopposed this year, so it was pretty expected, but my mom and my friends are still pretty happy about it. Next year, we want to do more school events … like food drives— [this year] we did a boba drive and that was pretty fun. We want to do more and raise a lot more money next year. Taking on the position as secretary is inspiring because now I’m more motivated and I think I realized that I can help my community out [more easily].”
Eli Garcia Chavez
During the Band Concert on April 18, freshman Eli Garcia Chavez, clarinet player in Concert Band, won the Most Valuable Award.
“I felt happy, and it felt like a good accomplishment. Even though during the concert I felt like I could have done better, [because] I didn’t really physically show a lot of emotion, it was good overall. [My family and friends] all mostly said to smile more and they just told me good job… It’s inconsistent, but in a week I would practice around four hours. [In middle school,] I had to choose an instrument for music, so I went on a generator and I found the clarinet … [Winning this award] has inspired me to get more awards. I am [aiming for Wind Ensemble].”
